Single-Storey Extensions and External Alterations to Existing Bungalow
This project reimagines a detached single-storey bungalow, transforming a modest two-bedroom home into a contemporary, well-proportioned family dwelling with improved layout, additional accommodation, and a strong architectural presence.
The design introduces a series of carefully considered single-storey extensions to the side and rear, seamlessly integrating with the existing building. To the north, a flat-roofed extension continues the line of the existing garage, replacing a redundant outbuilding and creating new internal bathroom and en-suite facilities. To the rear, a full-width extension opens up the home and delivers a new third bedroom, with all additions linked internally to create a coherent and flowing layout.
On the southern side, the extension wraps towards the front of the property, combining flat and pitched roof forms to add visual interest while respecting the scale of the original bungalow. The pitched roof element, set back from the main façade, echoes the angle of the existing roof before transitioning discreetly into a flat roof as it connects with the rear extension.
The front elevation is further enhanced with the introduction of a new bay window, adding depth and character while improving light and outlook to a newly arranged bedroom. Externally, the scheme adopts a contemporary palette of materials, with render to the front façade and horizontal cedar cladding to the side and rear elevations. These are complemented by powder-coated aluminium windows, grey rainwater goods, and matching roof tiles where applicable, delivering a modern yet understated aesthetic that elevates the overall appearance of the home.
